Book Review: Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn

This book was so good I read it in a day. (Well, almost a day. I read the first 3 chapters the night before, although I'd have still read it in a day seeing as I refused to sleep until I finished it. For someone who loves sleep, that is pure commitment). It's literally impossible to put down. It's my mum's book and she told me I'd like it (she knows me too well) but honestly whoever you are reading this, you'll love it too. It was actually during an episode of pointless that she first heard of it, Richard Osman told her it was a real page-turner. So she found it in a second hand bookstore in Whitby and bought it for £1.70. Anyway, enough of the waffling....

This book is about a failing marriage. Two lovers have drifted and had problems, then on their 5th wedding anniversary the man (Nick) goes to work, and returns to find his wife (Amy) has disappeared. It's a suspected murder, and due to the living room looking like a set up, the police suspect Nick. Nick's reactions and feelings don't really help convince everyone he's innocent either, surely he'd care more and be worried if he'd loved her?

As stated on the front cover, 'there are two sides to every story'. This book is written from Nick's point of view, in the present day. With alternate chapters as sections of Amy's diary from when they first met and fell in love, the events leading up to her disappearance. I'd love to go on explaining my feelings towards all the events in this book because it is so frustrating to read and have no control over what will happen.

Then there's the ending. Don't worry, I won't share it because I'm not that mean, but my initial reaction was "I read through all that for THAT ending?!" Because it's ridiculously disappointing, it makes me think how can Gillian Flynn write such a captivating story yet not think of a better ending for it? Although now I've had a few days to think about it, I kind of get that the ending is like that for a reason, but anyway I'll say no more about that.

To summarise, this book explores psychopathy, the effects of fame, love, fear, mystery and basically if you love crime stuff then I would seriously recommend this book. :)

Thank you for reading, this is my first book review blog post but I'll be doing them frequently (depending how fast I read)
