I haven't done a blog post in months and as its December, what could be better than a Christmassey blog post?! The tree photo has absolutely nothing to do with films but it was easier to photograph my tree than raid through my DVD shelves and take photos of them all!
So here are my top 10 Christmas films in order (ish)!
10. Robbie the Reindeer in: Hooves of fire.
I really like this film. Set in the North Pole, Robbie goes to stay with all of Santa's other reindeer. Its a funny tale of love, friendship and enemies among the reindeer and I'm trying so hard not to ruin any of these films by saying too much, but its good and you should watch it!
9. How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
I've only seen this film a few times when its been on TV, but I really like it. I love the message behind it (which comes out at the end so I won't dwell on that). Its a funny, feel-good film set in a strange place with strange Characters. And there is a dog, Enough said.
8. The Snowman.
What I love about this film is the fact there are no words, it can be understood universally and there are no language barriers. Its a really cute animation of a boy who makes a snowman who comes to life and the music is amazing!
7. While you were Sleeping.
I wouldn't really say this was that much of a Christmas film, but it is set at Christmas. Sandra Bullock plays the main character, who works in a train station and falls in love (well, lust) with a guy who always gets a train on the morning, Then one day he has an accident and ends up in hospital. Fantasizing, she tells herself she was going to marry him, so his family think he's engaged and she starts to get to know them. If you're a stereotypical girl and love romantic films then I'd recommend this!!
6. Miracle on 34th Street.
I like both the original version of this film and the re-make, although they have slightly different endings so I think in that sense I prefer the original. Its about a girl who's Mum doesn't believe in Santa, and doesn't want her to either. Then we meet the character Chris Cringle, who claims to be Santa. He works in a department store as their Santa, then tells the parents of the children where to get the presents their kids want. He also knows sign language (he's literally the best Santa ever). Some people think her's the real Santa, others think he is a fraud...
5. The Holiday
This is an exceptional film. A Christmas RomCom with Jude Law, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslett, what could be better? The two main characters are having relationship issues at Christmas time, so decided to do a home exchange in which they both go on holiday (for Christmas) and stay in the others' house. Do their problems follow them or are they resolved? Do they manage to escape men for Christmas or do they meet unexpected people on their travels?
4. Elf
If you haven't seen/heard of this film then where have you been the past 12 years? (wow I feel old)! Buddy is an Elf who lives in the North Pole with Santa and all the other elves. But at over 6 feet tall, he's never quite fitted in. Then he discovers he's actually a human who crawled into Santa's sack as a baby. So Papa Elf tells Buddy about his dad, and he undertakes the mission to travel to New York City and find him, But he has already learned the elf ways of eating, smiling and being, will he ever fit in?
3. Love Actually.
It was a struggle to put this third and not in the top two, because I've already watched this twice this year (in the space of one week). Its such an uplifting, feel-good film with some amazing actors/actresses. There are many different interconnecting story lines within this film, and we find out the love story of each character. Its just your classic romantic comedy set at Christmas time.
2. The Muppet's Christmas Carol.
I love this film because I've watched it every single year of my life since it came out (I don't even know when it came out, I don't ever remember not watching it). Charles Dickens' classic is told through the Muppets with a fantastic soundtrack, honestly if you haven't seen this, you should, It will forever be my favourite version of A Christmas Carol.
1. It's a wonderful Life.
This is arguably the greatest Christmas film ever and it really teaches you how precious each and every life is, and what family and friends really are all about. We follow George Bailey through his life until present day, where he is married with 4 children and runs the bank in town. Then he misplaces $8,000 right before Christmas and becomes depressed and stressed about it, Then an angel called Clarence appears to help him, and he wishes he'd never been born. So we see the world he lives in, as if he had never been in it.
And that's all for my top 10 Christmas films, I highly recommend watching any that you haven't already! And please feel free to comment with your favourite films :)
