My Summer Sewing Projects!

Hi everyone!

Seeing as sewing seems to have taken over my life recently I decided to do a blog post about it and show you some of the things I've recently made for myself. This blog post will cover garments, but I will also be doing one on interior textiles I've been creating over summer (or a separate post for each interior product - please let me know which you'd prefer in the comments)!

So without further ado, here we go!

Dog Print Swing Dress.

The pattern I used is the Tilly and the Buttons Francoise dress pattern (buy here), which I bought from The York Makery. I also bought the Gutterman Greyhounds fabric from there, which unfortunately cannot be bought from them online. I fell in love with this fabric as soon as I noticed the dogs on it. I had decided I wanted something quite jazzy and retro-like to accompany the style of the dress. But what I love the most is that from afar, the fabric just looks like a blue and white print, its only when you come closer that you realize that the white shapes are dogs! And dogs are life so I had to get it! i do admit that both the fabric and pattern were more pricey than I'd usually expect to pay, but I'm so impressed with the quality that I think it was worth the investment. The thread I used was gutterman colour 75.

Tilly and the Buttons sewing patterns are far better than conventional patterns as they come on thicker paper that doesn't tear as easily, so it can be re-used countless times. I also found the instructions incredibly easy to follow because they came complete with photographs as opposed to the usual diagrams you find. I will definitley be re-purchasing. The only downside is that due to my height, I had to add 6 inches to the length, although this was simple to do as the pattern came with markings of where to do so.

Contrast Fabric Shirt.

This was not intended to be worn with yoga leggings

I own a fair few vintage sewing patterns of my late Nanna's, so I had a hunt through them to find one suitable for my leftover greyhounds fabric, accompanied by some plain white. I used the women's weekly pattern pictured above, but as I didn't have enough of the greyhounds fabric left, I adjusted the design a little so that I had the back, sleeves, collar, front band and pocket flap in white and the front and sleeve cuffs in the greyhounds fabric. I really love the combination of these fabrics and I think they work well together, adding an arty twist to a conventional smart shirt/blouse. I also used the gutterman thread colour 75 as I felt that it matched the blue of the fabric to a tee. To top it off, I added blue buttons to tie the design together.

Off-The Shoulder Floral Top.

After creating my dress and shirt, I thought I'd go out to stock up on sewing supplies and ended up buying another pattern and some more fabric in the process. I chose a McCalls pattern from boyes which you can buy here. The company is American so if you're from the UK like me, I'd suggest buying it from your local Boyes store! This pattern did come up quite big on me and there was a lot of excess fabric, yet I had to add slightly more elastic to the shoulder/neck seam because I have quite broad shoulders. The top is meant to be loose fitting but if I make it again I will probably do it one size down. I also really love the fabric I chose for this, which is similar to the fabric shown on the pattern for A. I'm really happy with how this top has turned out and it goes perfectly under a pair of black dungarees! The tread I used was Gutterman 402.

I really hope you enjoyed reading this blog post, please do feel free to request any particular topics you'd like me to cover in future posts!

Peace and love xo
