Dungarees for Days

One year old Ruth in dungarees
Hello lovely dreamers!

It has occurred to me that I haven't done a fashion-related blog post in a very long time, so today I have decided that I will! This post is long overdue but hopefully worth the wait. I thought I would talk about my favourite fashion item, dungarees.

Dungarees were incredibly popular when I was a little one in the 90's. I can't even count the amount of photos there are in family albums of toddler Ruth wearing dungarees or a pinafore dress of some sort. I had blue ones, pink ones, stripy ones, bright yellow ones, the list goes on. And I do believe that our own styles that develop as we become adults are somewhat influenced by what our parents dressed us in as children. Although I now hate and do not own anything in the colour pink, I'm not one to shy away from colourful or patterned clothing. There's just something about dressing plain that doesn't feel like me, I don't feel creative or productive when my outfit lacks imagination.

What I love about dungarees is that they are so versatile. They are so much more than just a bit of denim you can wear with a standard t-shirt. They transform that t-shirt, the straps and bib working as a contrast to the garment beneath. And there are so many styles and colours. I find dungarees so perfect for this time of year, as it starts to get cooler. Because of the extra layer on the front, you don't need a jacket during mild weather, they are so easy to wear and your outfit feels complete and not lacking in any way.

Above, are three photos of my current dungarees. As well as these, I have about 6 pinafore dresses. I love the Raspberry dungarees from ASOS Tall, their spaghetti straps are something different and I like their quirky, unusual style and bright colour. They are very flattering and go with anything plain such as white or grey.

In the middle, are my vintage favourites. I bought these GAP dungarees from a vintage fair in my first year of uni, and they feature in my Vintage Look Book. If you look closely, the metal adjusters on the straps don't match up, but I like that. I love vintage clothing, wearing a garment that has a history, giving new life to clothing that somebody no longer loved.

And finally, are my black ASOS tall dungarees. These are incredibly soft and don't at all feel like heavy, cardboard denim that some garments do! I love wearing these with shirts or light pastel colours for a contrast.

Perhaps I'm still a child at heart, maybe I look like one when I plait my hair and wear the same type of clothing that I did as a baby. But I'm very happy to stick with my own style. And even when they go out of 'fashion' and nobody else is wearing them anymore, I will be. I wanted a pair for years before I finally found some to fit my tall frame. And I am very happy that they've become mainstream and thus readily accessible.
