Embracing Change

Hello lovely Dreamers!

We are now in September, one of my favourite months of the year. If you're curious as to why, check out my Reasons to Love September which I wrote a couple of years ago. September is, inevitably, a month of change. It's the Back to School season during which many people undertake new ventures. A new school year, a new job, a new house or a new lifestyle venture, the start of the academic year often brings about a sense of newness.

I had many debates with myself over what to name this blog post. Because, if you're anything like me, you will find drastic change in your life quite a difficult thing. It does feel surreal at times and can make you feel a little lost, it takes time to adjust. Did I want to name my blog post Coping with Change? No. Because to simply cope with something implies negativity, it implies a lack of enjoyment or involvement in an activity. Nobody wants to get through their life by simply coping. What about Adapting to Change? This is better, but somewhat neutral. We should, instead, Embrace the changes in our lives. After all, we only get one life.

I have had plenty of changes in my own life recently, I changed from being a student to being a graduate; I moved house and changed from being an independent to once again living with my parents; and, I've just started a new job. I'm not going to lie to you, I was incredibly anxious for my first day of work, despite there being no need to be. Remember that nerves are perfectly normal. I came home from my shift full of life and energy, I feel like employment gives me a purpose, a routine and a motivation. I've never been the type of person who is content with sitting at home all day every day doing nothing and I always keep myself busy.

I know that change can be daunting, but it can also be incredibly exciting and can enable you to develop an entirely new perspective on things. Change is good for you. Humans are not robots, we cannot do mundane things everyday and expect a continually fulfilling life. Every single day is different from the last. Its so easy to get comfortable with your life and not want to change anything. I, for one, was adamant that I did not want to leave University or the City of York. I liked being a student, I liked my house, I liked the routine I had and the activities I partook in. I was in my comfort zone and I did not want to leave that. But change is inevitable and it is essential. You never know what's round the corner.

This September, try and make little changes to your life. Maybe you need to rearrange your furniture or redecorate a room, maybe you need to get round to starting on that thing you've been procrastinating all year, maybe you need to cut ties with toxic people in your life. Even tiny changes can be effective, it doesn't have to be drastic like changing a career or a route to work. It can be as simple as having your morning coffee in a different seat at the kitchen table, dying your hair a different colour or cooking a meal you've never tried before. Break out of your comfort zone once in a while, you'll be surprised how fulfilling it can be.

Thank you so much for reading, peace and love xo
